FRIEZE

Digital Flagship Design

Overview

Frieze holds a singular position in contemporary art: part fair, part publication, part cultural institution. Its digital presence told a quieter story, with fairs across five cities operating as loosely related sub-brands, a magazine treated as a separate property, and a homepage that carried none of the cultural weight the name commands.

Elmedia Studio explored what a reimagined Frieze could look like as a global ecosystem rather than a calendar of events, unifying fairs, exhibitions, magazine and editorial voices into one coherent system without flattening what makes each part distinct.

This is a strategic exploration only. Elmedia Studio is not affiliated with, endorsed by or engaged by Frieze, and the work is presented as a concept.

The Challenge

The site had no brand architecture governing what lived where and why, so it defaulted to recency: latest posts, recent grants, newest reviews. That logic rewards insiders who already know what they are looking for and quietly excludes everyone else. Ticketing sat buried in navigation, the magazine felt detached from the fairs, and the institution had no digital equivalent to its real cultural standing.

The Approach

The POV film was generated with AI to visualise the concept. In production it would be shot on location.

We reorganised the homepage around identity rather than chronology, opening with a looped POV film of the fair itself: the champagne, the conversations held in front of the work, the atmosphere of the floor, the red sticker landing on a sold piece–what it feels like to attend Frieze.

Feeling precedes information, and for anyone new to the art world that film does the work a mission statement cannot. Beneath it, the current fairs sit with ticketing directly in reach, because purchase intent should never require a menu hunt. Exhibitions follow, then Frieze Magazine and its latest issues, establishing the editorial arm as part of the institution rather than an adjacent property.

Perspectives and recent writing move to a highlighted lower section, still present and still credible, but positioned as depth for those already oriented rather than the entrance for those who are not.
